Ballet Classes Royal Academy of Dance

Curriculum follows the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus, The RAD was founded in 1920 and comprised the joining of the Russian, Italian, French, English, and Danish schools of thought. The RAD, based in London,England, is the largest examining body of classical ballet worldwide, with its syllabi being taught internationally, including the National Ballet School in Toronto,ON. The Royal Academy of Dance promotes knowledge, understanding and practice of dance internationally. They seek to accomplish this through promoting dance educating and training students and teachers and providing examinations to reward achievement.

The Pre School, Pre Primary and Primary Award levels are a creative, engaging and stimulating series of classes that focus on joy of movement, musicality, basic technique and coordination and a sense of freedom, interpretation and discovery. They serve as a valuable stepping stone to the Graded levels.

The Graded levels combine classical ballet and contemporary ballet, natural movement and character folk dance.Studying these  elements together gives the students a solid, versatile foundation for their dance education.Increased focus on correct technique, musicality,  artistry sense of enjoyment are studied.

Yearly Examinations or Class Awards are available to all ballet students to ensure each dancer is working towards their potential to optimize their training. Examinations are very valuable tools for teachers, students and parents to measure progress, success and areas of improvement in a positive rewarding encouraging environment.

Vocational Executant Level

From Intermediate Foundation through to Advanced 2, the introduction of pointe work commences in addition to more advanced classical and contemporary variations.

Students may only dance en pointe under the discretion of their teacher when it is deemed that they are physically capable and possess  the maturity required to dedicate to this beautiful and challenging art form.Pointe work should not be attempted until the bones and growth plates have strengthened sufficiently. This generally takes place after the growth spurt occurring  around the age of 11, however students must show strength in posture, placement and rotation of the legs, regardless of what age they are, in order to be considered.

At the vocational level the RAD Intermediate and Advanced 1 examinations can be used as high school credits.

Jazz Lyrical Acro Jazz Contemporary Modern Tap National Character

Tap Dance

Classes include a warm up and introduction to the various steps and rhythms associated with this popular dance style. Studying Tap alongside other genres strengthens dancers musicality, rhythm and coordination and expands their musical appreciation.

NATIONAL AND CHARACTER DANCE

RAD CHARACTER DANCE

This genre is a specific subdivision of classical dance. It is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance, mostly from European countries, and uses movements and music which have been adapted for the theatre. Character dance is integral to much of the classical ballet repertoire. Popular character dance adaptations for ballet also include the national dances of Hungary, Ukraine, Poland, Italy and Spain: csárdásmazurkatarantellaflamenco, etc.

ISTD NATIONAL DANCE

This genre covers a wide range of European Folk Dance including Scottish,German, Austrian,Romanian, Danish and English to name but a few. These traditional dances were developed by communities in the corresponding country and help provide a sense of community and awareness of others.

JAZZ MODERN ACROJAZZ

CONTEMPORARY LYRICAL

These classes include a warm up, floor work, stretching and conditioning and various jumps,, turns and combinations reflective of the specific genre in addition to dance routines.

Due to the technical nature of these classes and their foundation drawing upon classical technique it is highly recommended that ballet is studied alongside these dance genres to maximize training.

Solos/ Duets

Local Dance competitions are a fun engaging opportunity to provide dancers additional performance opportunities and  provide an outlet to see other dancers sharing a similar love of dance. It also provides dancers with opportunities to engage in private/ semi private  or small group classes with increased attention to detail, performance, technique and artistry for   more enrichment in their training.

At DVAD we would like to offer any students who are interested in participating in competitive dance the opportunity to work on a solo/ duet if we believe they technically and artistically have the ability to meet the criteria without requiring a group competitive dance as well.

As such we do not exclude anyone who genuinely is interested in enriching their training.

Additionally we do not give more priority to competitive classes versus non competitive. All of our regularly scheduled classes focus on correct posture, alignment, technique, musicality, choreography, and artistry.Students are placed as close to age where possible in addition to their ability and proficiency.
